VENETO WINES
Venice and the region around it, the Veneto, is Italy's largest
producer of DOC (denominazione di origine controllata) wines
- the Italian equivalent of appellation controlled wines. As
a result, there is no shortage of good local wines to try, including
several names that will be familiar to wine drinkers such as
Soave, Valpolicella and Bardolino, and many new ones to discover
as well.
Among the whites, one of the most common is Prosecco,
a delicious sparkling wine from vineyards around Valdobbiadene
and Conegliano in the rolling hills north of Treviso. A good
prosecco will be light, dry, inexpensive. The most highly prized
(and expensive) version of prosecco is known as Cartizze.
A more rustic, unfizzy version is served by the glass in bacari.
Bittersweet Soave is the best Veneto still white; reliable producers
include Pieropan and Inama.
Prosecco is also the basis of the Bellini invented at Harry's
Bar, and other variations which mix it with different fruit
juices to make a delightful aperitif.
|
| Soave
is a very easy-drinking wine, which it needs to be as over 52
milion litres are produced every year. Makers whose Soaves can
be recommended include Anselmi, Bertani, CS di Soave, Guerrieri-Rizzardi,
Masi, Pieropan, Tedeschi and Zenato. Soave goes well with appetisers,
pasta dishes, fish and seafood. |
Valpolicella
is the best-known red wine, and like Soave this can vary enormously
in quality. Try vineyards such as Alighieri, Bertani, Guerrieri-Rizzardi,
Masi, Tedeschi and Zenato. Don't confuse Valpolicella, which
is a stronger and richer version, well suited to strong meat
dishes. There is also Recioto della Valpolicella, which is a
strong but sweet red wine.
Another well-known varities is Bardolino, a
light, dry red that is a good accompaniment to all kinds of
meat dishes except perhaps for heaviest game. The recommended
manufacturers include most of the same names listed above. |
| Finally,
if you just want a cheap and cheerful drink, almost all restaurants
will offer a house white and red, available by the litre or
half-litre, and which can usually be relied on to be good drinkling
table wines. |
